Mathematics 2 A/B
Segment A of Mathematics 2 gives students practice in addition and subtraction strategies, then moves on to patterns and numbers ranging up to 1,000. Students gain experience with place values and regrouping with place values, and learn that patterns are repeating sequences that can be created using everyday objects. An understanding of problem-solving strategies is needed to solve problems using real-world and make-believe situations. It is important to be able to solve and analyze problems related to everyday situations, so an understanding of the monetary system and how to count it is necessary in real-life situations. Operations that involve the use of money are similar to numbers and involve a student’s knowledge of basic facts. Students learn to add two digit numbers.
Segment B continues with two digit numbers, but this time with subtraction. Students then move into telling time and understanding time schedules. The focus then moves to geometry, probability and fractions. Lessons include tessellations, congruent figures and symmetry. Adding and subtracting three-digit numbers prepares students for the shift to multiplication and division at the end of the course.
